STOMACH CANCER

Stomach is a sac like muscular structure located in the upper middle part fo the abdomen. The stomach recieves and hold the food that we eat. When there is uncontrolled growth in the lining of the stomach then the this is called stomach cancer or gastric cancer. Stomach cancer or gasrtric cancer can affect the main stomach or gastroesophageal junction, which is the point where esophagus meets the stomach. It is very common type of gastrointestinal cancers for which treatment is available in India. Stomach cancers are of many types but some of the most common types of gastric or stomach cancers include Adenocarcinomas, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours, Neuroendocrine Tumours and Lymphomas.

SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS

  • Indigestion with acidity

  • Unexplained weight loss

Diagnosis of Stomach Cancer in India

Stomach or gastric cancer is diagnosed through mutiple tests and investigations. The tests are advised after the physical examination of the patient by the stomach cancer specialist and surgeon in OPD. Following are the tests that are used to diagnose gastric or stomach cancer:

  • An ultrasound is the primary investigation to start with
  • An upper GI endoscopy is required to have an internal examination
  • CT Scan of the abdomen with contrast is considered one of the best imaging modality for diagnosing gastric cancer
  • Biopsy during the endoscopy can lead to the conclusive diagnosis
TREATMENT & COSTS

Treatment planning for stomach or gastric cancer in India is done based on the staging provided by a PET CT Scan of the whole body.

Stage 0 – This is the pre-cancer stage. Means that the growth has not converted into cancer yet. In this case the stomach cancer surgeon will best remove a part of your stomach to stop the spread.
