Transarterial Chemoembolization or TACE in India is a minimally invasive and one of the best techniques for treatment of liver cancer without surgery which aims at reducing or killing the tumour in liver by injecting chemo drug into the artery in liver.
There are two arteries that supply blood to liver, Hepatic artery and portal vein. Portal vein is the main supplier of blood or the feeder to liver whereas the hepatic artery provides blood supply to tumour in liver. So the best way is cutting off supply to the tumour through hepatic artery which can be reduced in size. In simple language Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in liver cancer is used to either reduce the size of the tumour or to kill it. Once the chemo drug is injected then the artery is sealed.
Transarterial Chemoembolization is used in India for treatment of liver cancers without surgery where tumour is quite big in size and cannot be operated or surgically removed.
Transarterial chemoembolization is done by insetring a thin tube or catheter through the thight similar to what is done during angiography. From there the catheter is pushed into hepatic artery. As such it is one of the best procedure for liver tumours however it is contraindicated for patients with chronic liver conditions like hepatitis or cirrhosis
Another variation of transarterial chemoembolization that is done in by team at Livcure Centre in Delhi/ NCR, India is called Drug Eluting Bead Transarterial Chemoembolization (DEB-TACE). The procedure is similar to TACE except that in this case the sealing of hepatic artery is done using drug eluting beads which keep releasing small dose of chemo drug which leads to more efficacious results.This is similar to putting a drug eluting stent in the heart artery that prevents blocakge from coming back.
